Wasel Pulls the Crowds in with Construction of Liebherr Flat Top in Cologne – Gallery
In the next 14 months, a new residential and commercial building will be built in a prime location on Cologne’s “Schildergasse” shopping mall. An appropriately dimensioned tower crane plays a – in the truest sense – central role in the forthcoming building construction work of the company BAUWENS.

The LIEBHERR 172 E-CB 8 Litronic was erected in the best Sunday excursion weather, measured in a configuration with a hook height of 40.5m and a radius of 50m from the centre of the main mast.

Punctually at 7:00 a.m. the go-ahead was given for construction and the first mast sections were towed backwards by truck into the cordoned-off area of the pedestrian zone. A 300t telescopic mobile crane from WASEL then installed the crane on a concrete foundation anchor prepared on site for this purpose.

During the course of the day, the WASEL site mutated into a real crowd puller. Questions from passers-by like “How high can he lift?” or “How long is the boom?” had to be answered more than once. In particular, the literal “tightrope act” of the two crane fitters during the final assembly of the main boom – at a height of more than 40m – caused appreciative gestures among the observers.
