Video: how first section of Telford's new footbridge will be lifted into place

A video has been created showing how the LG1750 crane will first be built and then used to lift a section of the new footbridge into place over the railway line.

Weather conditions will play a huge role in the success of the lift so the project team will be keeping a close eye on the forecast.

They will be hoping it is not too windy on the night of the lift.

The timings for the actual lifting of the bridge are currently planned for the early hours of July 1.

The road is expected to be reopened on July 3, weather permitting.

A diversions map can be found at which shows the alternative routes to the town centre during the closure period.

The advice for motorists is to use the diversions before they reach the town centre, particularly the Hollinswood Interchange and Greyhound roundabouts to avoid traffic building around peak times.

Businesses, including the council’s own employees, have been encouraged to stagger starting times or work from home where possible to help ease congestion.

Councillor Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for finance, commercial services and economic development, said: “As we approach this exciting stage, the communities’ support is very important; we ask for patience but also for help while the road closure is in effect.

“We urge everyone to check out the diversions map and plan their journeys via alternative routes, sharing lifts or using public transport if possible.

“We have to wait until closer to the time until we know exactly when the lift will take place and how the weather will affect it but we plan to reopen the roads on July 3.”

During the closure period, the flow of vehicles will be monitored both on the ground and by traffic control officers.

The next phase of the project due later this autumn, will involve a similar lift of the main walkway which is currently being assembled on site and planned.

Similar road closures will be required for the crane’s final visit when it will lift the largest and final section into place.

Last minute preparations are being made before the first section of Telford’s new footbridge is lifted into place.

Sections of the bridge are visible from the nearby A442 Queensway, near Telford Shopping Centre.

There is just over a week to go until the closure of the A442, allowing for one of Europe’s largest cranes to be erected on the southbound carriageway on June 27.
