Van Oord and Subsiduary Mackley Complete UK Coastal Flood Defence Project in Lydd, Kent – Video
The Lydd Ranges Sea Defences scheme protecting Romney Marsh from the effects of climate change has been completed successfully. Commissioned by the Environment Agency, Van Oord partnered with subsidiary Mackley to execute this coastal flood defence project. The project consisted of 320,000 cubic metres of shingle beach nourishment, the construction of 34 timber groynes, rock armour protection and other flood risk management related asset improvement and replacement works. The coastal defence project at Lydd forms part of a much larger coastal defence scheme to better protect the Kent coastline for the next 100 years.
Paul Hesk.Managing Director of Van Oord UK said, “Van Oord is proud to have contributed to the successful completion of the Lydd Ranges Sea Defence scheme. Whilst the project had its challenges, in particular the environmental sensitivities and the operational requirements of the adjoining firing ranges, the whole team, including the Environmental Agency, the Ministry of Defence and key stakeholders such as Natural England, were working collaboratively to deliver a scheme that all parties can justifiably be very proud.
