Sarens Installs Pedestrian Bridge at Douai Railway Station for MBB Metallic Bridges of Belgium s.a.

The primary objective of this project was for MBB Metallic Bridges of Belgium s.a. to construct a pedestrian bridge linking the Douai Railway Station to the new EuraDouai business district, facilitating safe passage for pedestrians across the railway tracks.

Sarens was contracted for the installation of the footbridge, spanning approximately 300m, to be lifted in three separate sections, each measuring 54m long and 6m wide. Each section weighed 145t.

Sarens deployed their CC 6800 crane, chosen for its impressive lifting capacity and reliability these complex lifting operations. The crane, configured with a Super Super Lift (SSL) and equipped with a main boom, super-lift, and 700t of counterweight, was essential for the precise placement of the bridge sections.

The project started on 3 June 2024 and was completed by 28 June 2024. Despite the tight schedule, Sarens’ team, led by Project Managers Arnaud Mathias and Abderahim Bouazza, executed the lifts efficiently, with operations conducted mainly at night to minimise disruptions to train services. The first section of the bridge was installed from midnight on Saturday, 15 June, to Sunday, 16 June, with subsequent sections installed on 22-24 June. This careful scheduling ensured minimal impact on daytime train operations.

The logistics of the project were challenging, requiring the transportation of the crane and its components to the site in Douai, with 54 trucks needed for the installation. Once on-site, the crane’s setup and mobilisation were meticulously planned to ensure safety and efficiency. The team faced the challenge of relocating the crane across the site within a tight timeframe, a task they accomplished successfully.
