Sarens Assist with Future-Proofing the Belgian Energy Grid
Sarens is proud to highlight the successful completion of two projects at Flémalle and Seraing Power Plants, both aimed at future-proofing the Belgian energy grid. These endeavours showcase their expertise in heavy lifting and transportation, as well as their unwavering commitment to safety and precision.
The connection between these two projects is their collective goal to enhance energy production and reliability in Belgium. Located just five kilometres apart in the Liège region, the new combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants at Flémalle and Seraing are designed to provide high efficiency and flexible deployment. These plants will play a crucial role in compensating for fluctuations in green energy production, particularly on cloudy or rainy days.
At Flémalle, as part of the new 875 MW power plant’s infrastructure upgrade, Sarens undertook the complex task of lifting and transporting:
- 6 module types with gross weights ranging from 160t to 366t,
- including special lifting frames, and
- 3 drums the gross weight of which ranged from 21t to 176t,
- also including special lifting frames.
This project involved meticulous planning and the use of specialised equipment. A Liebherr LR1750 and LR11000 performed tandem lifts, while SPMTs facilitated movement within the plant. The challenges included limited space and stringent safety protocols. the Sarens team conducted thorough risk assessments and adhered to all safety guidelines to ensure a successful, incident-free operation.
In Seraing, Sarens built an extension next to the existing power plan similar to the one completed in Flémalle. The extension was transported on 24 SPMT axle lines from storage to the site. The equipment deployed consisted of:
- the mighty CC6800
- the CC3800 as a tailing crane for the building of the extension.
Towards the end of the project, Sarens exchanged the CC3800 for a Liebherr LR1750.
Their team methodically planned the transport and lifting operations, also monitoring movements around a high voltage power line that traverses the site, securing safety for all project components and crew involved. Precision work was paramount, and the expertise of their team ensured the extension was transported and installed without accidents or downtime, while maintaining the existing power plan.
These projects at Flémalle and Seraing exemplify Sarens’ ability to handle complex heavy lifting and transportation operations. Their successful completion underscores their dedication to safety, precision, and excellence. They also highlight Sarens’ advanced equipment and unparalleled expertise, ensuring they meet and even exceed their clients’ expectations. Sarens continues to set the benchmark in the heavy lifting industry, delivering innovative solutions that drive progress.
