LASO transports components for Gardunha II Wind Farm in Portugal

LASO Transportes started the year with several projects in the field of renewable energy, and is currently in charge of a special transport logistics project for the Gardunha II Wind Farm in Portugal. The operation began at the end of January and is expected to end at the end of February.

LASO Transportes is transporting around 60 components for five wind turbines in total, coming from different points of the Iberian Peninsula. Due to the geographical setting of the wind farm, the location is difficult to reach with the large sized wind turbine components. This operation required carrying out several interventions in advance, such as removing signage, pruning trees and creating areas for the transshipment of components.

Several specialized equipment were required, such as axle lines and the Blade Lifter, to enable the transport through villages/towns centres and along the winding roads in the mountain range. For example, the Blade Lifter plays a decisive role in areas with winding roads, tight curves, in populated areas, and high slopes. The Blade Lifter allows the wind blade to be lifted up to 60º of inclination, as well as rotating 360º on its axis.

Sixty trips are required for the the transport of the components for the 5 wind turbines. Cooperation between the different departments, in this case, Wind, Cranes and Heavy Lift, is essential to guarantee the success of the project, shares LASO. A team of approximately 60 people is involved in the operation, including more than 20 drivers, 30 pilots and more employees from other departments.

Cooperation of the Castelo Branco City Council and the Portuguese Police Agents

The cooperation of the Castelo Branco City Council and the Portuguese Police Agents involved has been imperative for the success of the operation, LASO said. Given the complexity of the operation, Portuguese Police Agents have been essential to guarantee the safety of merchandise and public roads, while the municipality of Castelo Branco has been cooperative in communicating the transport planning in places where special transport leads to road restrictions.  Source: LASO Transportes
