Iv, TU Delft and ZJA I Architects & Engineers Collaborate on Possibility of a Sognefjord Floating Bridge
Is a bridge over the Sognefjord in Norway a possibility?
What if crossing Norway’s iconic Sognefjord could take minutes instead of hours?
Together with ZJA I Architects & Engineers and Delft University of Technology, the Dutch engineering and design specialists, Iv, have explored just that, designing a floating bridge spanning 4.5km to replace the existing ferry service.
Designing a stable floating bridge over the Sognefjord came with unique engineering challenges. With depths reaching 1000m, powerful currents, and intense weather, every bridge element would have to endure the forces of wind, water, and movement—all while offering ample clearance for ship traffic underneath.
Though not constructed, this project illustrates the creative engineering that defines us. Iv can take an almost technically impossible problem and turn it into a feasible design.
