High Level of Engineering and Safety Expertise During Malayan Plant Expansion by Mammoet

Mammoet recently completed a lifting and installation project in Malaysia displaying both engineering expertise and operational efficiency. The project contributed to a manufacturing plant’s ongoing facility expansion plan and involved the lifting and installation of a 120t reactor tank and two 80t stripping columns in Pasir Gudang. Additionally, Mammoet’s solution brought about minimal modifications to the plant’s existing infrastructure and caused the least possible disruption to the site’s day-to-day production activities during lifting and installation activities.

This was particularly challenging, as Mammoet needed to complete the construction of a large Terex CC2800 crawler crane on site before lift operations could even begin. So, the team need to expertly position crawler crane components around the site such that they did not interfere with adjacent work, and then sequence crane assembly work around the plant’s pre-existing delivery times.

Lifting of site components could then proceed from one physical location, with the Terex CC2800 and Senebogen S5500 working in tandem; lifting loads to a height of around 50m. 20 axle lines of SPMT were used to transport each item from a storage location to the lift site.

The sequence used to lift the site’s reactor and strippers was designed such that repositioning of the super-lift tray and counter-weights for subsequent lifts was not necessary. With this design in place, there was no need to have an additional crane for assistance at the back of the main crane, further reducing take-up of crucial ground space on-site.

With regards to safety, the team incorporated additional evacuation protocols into its procedure. This was done to reflect and mitigate the typical risks of operating in a “live” plant, since the consequences of such risks occurring are much higher than usual lifting projects. The technical expertise of Mammoet engineers, together with crane supervisors’ equipment knowledge helped to achieve the optimum safe footprint on site.

The project showcased Mammoet’s commitment to adhering to highest safety standards while delivering engineering expertise and operational efficiency. Successful completion of lifts and installations was all done throughout with minimal disruption to the plant’s daily operations.

Completion of this project marks a key step in the plant’s expansion project where an increase in manufacturing production is expected.
