Felbermayr Cranes Remove Bridge Sections in Graz

In late January the inner-city restauration work in the Austrian city of Graz entered the next phase with the spectacular removal of a 64m long bridge element. The construction workers have been working at full speed since January 8th on the so-called “static strengthening” of the bridge: the asphalt has already been milled away, the road slab and cantilever arms are being cut into parts and transported away.

Two mobile cranes from Felbermayr lifted the south section of the Tegetthoff Bridge and placed it on the north side of the bridge where it remained for the time being. Smaller concrete sections of the bridge were removed by Felbermayr’s telescopic handlers.

A fully occupied tram weighs around 40 tons. In order to be able to handle this load in the future, the Tegetthoff Bridge is now being made fit for rail. Eventually the connection over the River Mur, which has existed in this form since autumn 1975, must also be suitable for trams by the end of 2025.

Things got spectacular in the morning of January 22nd, when part of the bridge was lifted away using two of Felbermayr’s mobile cranes with a lifting capacity of 350t. Immediate preparations began at 1 a.m., and at 9 a.m. the southern parts of the bridge were lifted over the River Mur and placed on the remaining Northern part of the bridge, where they were gradually cut up and transported away.
