DEME’s Orion arrives in Vlissingen
The DEME heavy lift crane vessel, Orion, has arrived in Vlissingen from Bremerhaven to prepare for the vessel’s official naming ceremony. The vessel has recently completed sea trials and lift tests in the southern Baltic as reported on this website .
The first contract for the vessel will probably be for the Belgian offshore wind company Parkwind which awarded DEME Offshore the EPCI contract for foundations on the Arcadis Ost 1 OWF in the German sector of the Baltic. DEME announced in February 2021 that Orion would be deployed to install the 100m long 28 XXL monopile foundations each weighing around 2000t. The tailor-made, motion compensated gripper system installed on the Orion for this work will be able to handle enormous foundations of up to 2500t.
Just over two years ago the vessel’s 5000t Liebherr HLC 295000 crane was severely damaged during testing in Rostock.
