Video: Bulker and Containership Collide off Denmark

27 March 2018

A bulk carrier collided with a containership earlier this morning in the Great Belt strait in Denmark, separating the islands of Zealand and Funen.

A brief fire has been reported on one of the vessels, according to the Danish Coast Guard, however, the agency is yet to provide further details on the incident.

The ships involved in the collision have been identified as 1,924 TEU boxship Delphis Gdansk and Handysize bulk carrier BBC Neptune.

Based on the images released, the bulker sustained a blow to the aft side of its bow, which was considerably damaged. The extent of the damage onboard the containership is not known, but the crash caused several Hapag-Lloyd containers to tumble down from the boxship.

There have been no injuries reported to the crew and no oil spill, the coast guard added.

Maritime authorities in Denmark are investigation a collision between a containership and a bulk carrier in Denmark’s Great Belt, which caused some containers to fall into the water.

The incident involved the 178-meter Delphis Gdansk, built in 2017, and the 190-meter BBC Neptune, built in 2010.

Officials say they were alerted at about 7:30 a.m. local time of the collision in Denmark’s Great Belt, a deep water shipping lane between the islands of Zealand and Funen, part of the Danish Straits.

A small fire broke out aboard the BBC Neptune, however it has since been put out.

Seven containers are reported to have been lost from the containership. At least some of the containers have been recovered.

No injuries or major pollution has been reported.
