Boskalis to build landmark polder development in Singapore worth EUR 400 million

Papendrecht, 3 April 2018 

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) has received a Letter of Award from the Housing & Development Board of Singapore for the development of a polder at the north western tip of Pulau Tekong.

The contract value for the joint venture with Penta Ocean Construction Company is approximately EUR 800 million of which Boskalis’ share is approximately EUR 400 million. 

Boskalis and its partner will be responsible for building the required dike closures and reinforcement of the existing dike to create a 10 kilometers long dike, the drainage of the reclamation area and extensive dry earthmoving activities to create Singapore’s first polder.

In contrast to reclaiming land by filling a reclamation area up to and above sea level, the land for the polder is reclaimed by draining off the water by means of pumps and canals. For this project Boskalis is able to draw on its expert knowledge and experience with dike closures and the construction and reinforcement of sea dikes in the Netherlands gained over the past 100 years.

The high quality of the proposal by Boskalis and its partner played a decisive role in the contract award; solely on price the proposal came in fourth.  

Construction works will commence in the coming months. The construction activities will take place over a 4 year time frame and are expected to be completed in 2022.

Baggeraar Boskalis gaat polder aanleggen in Singapore

Boskalis gaat een polder aanleggen in Singapore. Volgens de onderneming gaat het om de eerste polder in heel Zuidoost-Azië. 

De baggeraar en maritiem dienstverlener heeft de opdracht voor de klus van 400 miljoen euro binnengehaald, samen met Penta Ocean Construction Company.

Boskalis heeft de afgelopen jaren geholpen bij de landaanwinning in Singapore waardoor de stadstaat heeft kunnen groeien. Het aanleggen van een polder, waarbij het land niet tot boven zeeniveau hoeft te worden opgehoogd, is nieuw voor de regio.

Boskalis-topman Peter Berdowski spreekt over een ”historisch moment”, waarbij de onderneming kan putten uit de rijke geschiedenis op het gebied van de aanleg van dijken en polders in Nederland.

De opdracht behelst onder meer de benodigde dijkdichtingen en het versterken van de bestaande dijk om een 10 kilometer lange zeewering te creëren.

Ook worden de bedrijven verantwoordelijk voor het droogleggen van het gebied en het zogeheten droog grondverzet dat nodig is om de polder te realiseren. De polder moet in 2022 klaar zijn. SOURCE: NU.nl
