Award Shortlist for Cleveland Bridge’s A14 Work

Cleveland Bridge UK Ltd has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2020 Structural Steel Design Awards for its recent work on the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme.

The Darlington-based company was appointed to fabricate and construct six major new bridges on the section of the new A14 between the A1 and Cambridge for the A14 Integrated Delivery team on behalf of Highways England as part of a £1.5billion scheme to improve the A14 trunk road between Cambridge and Huntingdon.

In a world-renowned annual ceremony, The Structural Steel Design Awards aim to celebrate the excellence of the UK in the field of steel construction. Shortlisted projects are expected to have a minimum threshold of excellence in architectural and engineering terms and to be cost effective. The winners are expected to be announced in October.

Cleveland Bridge was appointed to fabricate and construct the six bridges, one of these being the scheme’s showpiece bridge: an ambitious 750m-long viaduct over the River Great Ouse. The viaduct required 6,000 tonnes of steel, comprising 76 separate main girders and 800 cross girders.

Most of the main girders required were 40m long, 2m deep and weighed 50 tonnes. Despite some challenging conditions, the bridge was completed on budget and ahead of schedule.

Chris Droogan, Managing Director of Cleveland Bridge UK, said “The team is very proud to have been shortlisted for this prestigious award. Cleveland Bridge UK has a proven track record and vast experience in large-scale structural steel construction worldwide and the company has the largest bridge building capacity in the UK.

“Effective planning and collaboration were a hallmark of this project, particularly for the more complex bridges, enabling all parties to understand each other’s requirements and to work effectively together to meet and exceed programme times.

This shortlisting is a positive endorsement of our capabilities and relationships, which ensured the successful delivery of this landmark project.”
