ALE reaches half-way of transport milestone for Indonesian wind project

ALE has reached the half-way milestone to transport over 100 abnormal loads for Vena Energy’s Tolo 1 wind project in Indonesia.

As part of the whole contract, ALE has been tasked to provide the full transport, craneage and installation (TCI) package of 20 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines comprising five tower sections to make up a total of 220 abnormal loads.

The components were received at the Makassar Port, where they were unloaded and stored. The generators, weighing 74t each, and the tower sections, weighing 86t each, were loaded onto 11 axle lines of conventional trailers in a configuration of 3 x 2 file 5 as well as 6 axle lines of clamp tower trailers.

This is the first these specialist clamp tower trailers had been used in Indonesia and were ideally suited when negotiating the overhead restrictions on the challenging route as the driving height could be reduced.

For the 64m-long blades, 12 axle lines of specialist extendable blade trailers were utilised in a configuration of 3 x 2 file 4 axles.

The components are being transported to the project site 100km away in Jeneponto, the South Sulawesi province.

Jacques Bezuidenhout, ALE’s Project Manager explained: “We are proud to be working on one of the country’s first wind farms, a landmark project. By performing the full, integrated package, we can really showcase not only our ability to carry out every aspect of the heavy lifting scope through to completion, but also our dedication to the wind sector with the specialist trailer equipment, skills and expertise.”

The craneage recently started with the completion of pre-population on two turbine foundations using a 450t mobile crane.

The main-build operation will commence soon using a specialist 750t crane. ALE will utilise their specialists for the ALE-Wind Services division to perform the lifting and electro-mechanical installation.
