AF Offshore Decom Completes 2023 L7 Field Multi Topside Preparation Campaign

A great achievement has been reached by the AF Offshore Decom Team. This week, 13 months after signing the contract, they marked the successful completion of the last of this year’s multi topside preparation campaigns in the Dutch L7 Field.

In just over 12 months, their team have efficiently prepared all nine topsides ready for removal. Despite reusing existing lifting points on the topsides, the team have installed and welded a number of new padeyes. This precision work is crucial for structural integrity. Beyond welding, the team separated modules, prepared smaller structures, and conducted preliminary work on jackets. Each step has been crucial for a safe and successful removal campaign.

The first three topsides have already been removed and transported to their yard, Vats, during the summer for dismantling and recycling.

AF Environmental Base Vats, situated on Norway’s South-West coast, is one of Europe’s most modern and environmentally sound recycling facilities, custom built to handle discarded offshore and maritime assets.

Vats is an EU Approved Green Recyling Facility and comprises of 68,000 m2 (730,000 sq.ft.) processing area; concrete surface with membrane and drainage systems underneath. Any surface rain or process fluid on the dense cover is collected and transported to a treatment plant with continuous monitoring, where the fluids are cleaned before outlet to sea.

To date, more than 400,000t of oil & gas infrastructure has been dismantled at the yard, comprising of everything from topsides and jackets, floating loading buoys, floating production & storage assets (FPU’s & FPSO’s) and pipelines and subsea infrastructure.

↓↑ The topsides were lifted and transported back to Den Helder by the Bonn & Mees floating crane Marador 3, for seafastening to a barge. Next, these platforms were towed to AF Environmental Base, Vats, in Norway for load-in, onshore dismantling and recycling.

They are now preparing for another busy year in 2024 filled with challenging opportunities.
