20 SBJs installed
The installation vessel INNOVATION installs the final Suction Bucket Foundation
Date 2 August 2018
On July 30, 2018, the last of 20 Suction Bucket Jackets (SBJ) was installed at the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm. This completes the foundation installation of 20 wind turbine generators.
Last Monday, the last SBJ for Borkum Riffgrund 2 was installed with the installation vessel Innovation, about 54 kilometers from the German coast. Together with the 36 monopile foundations which were already installed, the foundation installation of the next Ørsted wind farm in Germany is completed. The installation of the 56 WTG components has started already and soon to be finished in the third quarter of 2018.
The SBJ is a three-legged jacket structure with cup foundations. Instead of piling a monopile foundation into the seabed, these cup foundations are anchored into the seabed with the need of suction. Next to the lower costs due to a faster installation and easier dismantling, the hardly existing noise missions are a great advantage.
After construction, Borkum Riffgrund 2 will have an export capacity of about 450 megawatts. This means that approximately 460.000 German households will be supplied with green energy. Full commissioning is planned for early 2019.
The GeoSea Innovation is one of the largest wind farm installation vessels with a 1,500t crane lift and 3,750sq m deck area.
