The Sun has always been an endless source of energy. Just think of all the energy resources we use today. They all originate from sunlight. Oil and gas, were created millions of years ago from sunlight via the difficult conversion from plants and other vegatation into oil and gas. Even wind today, would not be there if it was not because of sunlight.
I therefore welcome any inititiative that tries to use the sunlight as much as possible and create the electric car that charges itself and get rid of difficult and complex energy conversion systems like Wind turbines.
I am not saying, we should forget about wind, but both sunlight- as well as wind energy can well exist next to eachother. As a matter of fact, they complement eachother. At night when we do not have sunlight, we can make use of wind energy and vice versa.
It is fantastic, that a Dutch team of the Technical University of Eindhoven, managed to win the Solar Family Car Challenge in 2015 and now have started their own company with the mission to make electrical driven Solar Charged cars available to the general public by 2030!

The Lightyear One’s optimized aerodynamics and weight saving features greatly improve its range. Depending on your battery configuration you have between 400 — 800 km of range buffered in the battery.
A Lightyear of sustainable & scalable transportation
Currently, all cars of the world combined drive one light year, every year. That is 9.500.000.000.000 km. Every year. Powered by fossil fuels. Our goal is to accelerate the adoption of electric cars so that by 2030, one light year will have been driven electric. To that, we are providing a scalable solution.
